Katia Fuentes was born and raised in Mexico City, where she earned her degree in Art and Commu-nication at the University Nuevo Mundo. She now lives in San Francisco and has participated in numerous cultural events and art exhibits at Somarts, the Photo Center, and the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts. Her work focuses on the social, political, cultural and visual aspects of Mexico, Cuba, Spain and the Mission barrio in San Francisco. Artist's Statement "Through the projection of imagery on my body, I represent different icons of my, Mexican, culture, particularly ones that intrigue me. "This series of photographs is about defining myself and re-establishing who I am, living, as I do, in foreign country. "It is a search for symbolic roots. | | "It is a rescue of my own culture, redefining where I come from and who I am. "It is a commitment to my now-foreign Mexico and to the myths that form its culture. "It is a tattoo of light that will last through an artwork, in this case, photographs. "It is a statement of myself, overcoming the nostalgia of Mexico and the negativity of America. "The iconic projected images on my skin are of an Olmeca head, the Virgin of Guadalupe, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, the Calavera Catrina, Frida with an image of Diego Rivera on her forehead, and a Zapatista woman.
